Queer-friendly massage in Melbourne - care that sees all of you

Walking into a healthcare setting when you’re queer can carry a particular kind of weight. Before you’ve even said a word, there’s a calculation happening: Will this person misgender me? Will I have to explain myself? Will I feel safe here?

That calculation is exhausting. And it’s one that too many people in the LGBTQIA+ community make every single time they seek care.

What I know is that everyone deserves to receive quality, evidence-based care without having to manage a practitioner’s discomfort or ignorance on top of everything else. That’s what BodyWide is here to offer.

Research consistently documents what queer people already know from lived experience. A 2024 study published in the Medical Journal of Australia surveyed 516 trans Australians and found that over half (56%) had experienced at least one incident of trans-related discrimination when accessing healthcare, with more than 40% having been misgendered and 15% experiencing delayed care because their health complaint was not taken seriously.

The consequence isn’t just emotional. When people don’t feel safe seeking care, they don’t seek it. Or they delay it until something becomes urgent.

And the research on chronic pain tells a striking story. A large national study published in the journal PAIN in 2023, analysing data from over 134,000 adults, found that sexual minority adults experience significantly higher rates of chronic pain than their heterosexual peers. This is a pattern reflected here in Australia too, where Private Lives 3, the largest national survey of LGBTQI+ health and wellbeing conducted by La Trobe University, consistently documents significant health disparities across the community. Researchers link these outcomes not only to physical causes, but to the accumulated physiological toll of minority stress: the chronic, low-level hyper-vigilance that comes from navigating a world that doesn't always make room for you.

Stress doesn’t stay in your head. It lives in your shoulders, your jaw, your neck, your lower back. It raises cortisol and tightens fascia. It keeps your nervous system on guard. For people carrying that kind of load, bodywork isn’t a luxury, it’s a way of giving your body permission to let go.

I’m not here to claim I have all the answers about what your body needs or what your experience has been. What I can offer is skilled, science-based treatment, a genuine willingness to listen, and a session where you lead.

Research on therapeutic massage shows it reduces cortisol while increasing serotonin and dopamine. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body out of its fight-or-flight state. For people carrying a chronic stress load, that physiological shift isn’t trivial.

And beyond the biochemistry, there is something meaningful about spending an hour somewhere your body is handled with skill and zero judgement. Where you don’t have to brace for an awkward comment or a moment of ignorance. Where you can just be treated.

An affirming attitude without clinical skill isn’t enough, and clinical skill without genuine respect isn’t either. What I’m offering at BodyWide is both: evidence-based treatment delivered in Melbourne’s progressive inner-north suburb of Brunswick East, by someone who will follow your lead and respect your boundaries.

Come in, get good treatment and leave feeling better than when you arrived. That’s the whole idea.

A space that’s genuinely yours.
